The questions we get asked most often when business owners and facilities teams are commissioning a new fire alarm system. If yours isn’t here, just call or drop us a line.
It depends on the building’s size, layout, use and occupancy. Fire alarm systems are categorised under BS 5839 (e.g. L1 for full coverage, L2/L3/L4/L5 for varying scope, P1/P2 for property protection). The free site survey establishes which category your building requires — we won’t over- or under-specify the system, just match what the standard and the risk profile call for.
For non-domestic premises in England and Wales, the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 requires the responsible person to ensure adequate means of detection and warning. That doesn’t always mean a full electronic alarm — small low-risk premises may meet the standard with simpler arrangements — but most commercial buildings, HMOs, hotels and similar will need a properly designed system. The fire risk assessment determines what counts as “adequate”.
A small commercial install can often be done in 1–3 days. Larger buildings — multi-floor offices, HMOs, hotels — usually take longer and may be phased to work around occupancy. The survey gives you a specific timeline, and where work needs to happen out of hours we’ll schedule it that way.
Yes. On completion you receive the commissioning certificate, the design documentation, and the user instructions for the system. If you need fire risk assessment and escape plan documentation to satisfy regulations, we can supply those too. Everything in one folder, ready for your insurer or inspector.
Yes — and most clients ask us to. After install we offer planned routine servicing (typically twice a year per BS 5839) and we’re on call for faults if something goes wrong. One team designed it, one team knows it inside out, one team fixes it.
Yes — BLEC is BAFE registered (ID 303207). BAFE is the independent register of competent fire safety providers, and BAFE-certified work is the standard insurers, regulators and tendering bodies recognise. Worth checking on any contractor you’re considering — it’s the simplest way to confirm fire safety competence.
