The questions we get asked most often when employers and facilities managers commission extinguisher servicing or first set up a contract. If yours isn’t here, just call or drop us a line.
BS 5306-3 requires an annual basic service for all portable fire extinguishers — usually called a “service” or “annual maintenance”. On top of that, an extended service every 5 years is required for most stored-pressure extinguishers, and a discharge test & overhaul every 10 years for CO₂ extinguishers. We diary all three on every contract and prompt you when each is due.
It depends on the fire risks present. As a rough guide: water or foam for general offices, retail and accommodation (Class A); CO₂ for electrical risks (server rooms, near IT equipment); dry powder for mixed risks and outdoor/industrial settings (covers A, B and C); wet chemical for kitchens (Class F cooking oils). The Fire Risk Assessment will specify the right types, quantities and locations for your premises — we typically combine the two services.
BS 5306-8 sets out the calculation — broadly, at least two Class A extinguishers per floor, with a maximum 30 metre travel distance from any point in the building to the nearest extinguisher. Additional units are required for specific risks (kitchens, electrical, fuel stores) and large open spaces. We’ll site-visit, calculate, and quote against the exact requirement — not over-spec.
The engineer checks each extinguisher’s pressure (gauge in the green), weight (to confirm contents are intact), condition (no corrosion, dents or damage), seals and pins (intact, tamper-evident), hose, handle and nozzle, and signage and mounting. A service tag is attached with date and engineer details. Anything beyond economical repair gets quoted for replacement, like for like.
Yes — that’s a core part of the contract. We diary your annual service, your 5-year extended service, your 10-year CO₂ overhaul, and any equipment-specific dates. You’ll get a reminder ahead of each due date, with a proposed visit slot. Skipping a service breaches BS 5306 compliance and can invalidate your insurance — we make sure it doesn’t happen by accident.
Yes. We offer fire safety training covering extinguisher familiarisation (which one to use on what), basic operation (PASS technique), fire warden duties, and evacuation procedures. Training can be a one-off session or part of your ongoing contract. Many clients combine training with the annual service visit to minimise disruption.
